Jervis Bay's Original Lighthouse
Jervis Bay original lighthouse was constructed on the St Georges Head, Jervis Bay. Construction had been complete in 1860. It wasn't until Later this year, when the original map of Jervis Bay had been studied, that they had realised just how inaccurate the map and marking of the proposed lighthouse location was.
There was many doubts about whether the lighthouse had been erected at the chosen location. On top of this matter, the contractor seemed to have built the lighthouse closer to the quarry he was ob
taining the rock from which turned out to be just 2.5nm north of the intended sight.
From 1864 - 1893, A total of 23 Shipwrecks occured on the South Coast of NSW in the vicinty of the Jervis Bay area.
By 1889 the lighthouse was eventually replaced and a new lighthouse was constructed on top of the Beecfrost Peninsular, at Point Perppendicular. This was a much more suitable location as it was the northern headland of the Jervis Bay entrance.
The lantern from the Cape St George lighthouse was removed and is now used in the Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse which was constructed in 1904.
Between 1917 -1922, The Cape St George Lighthouse was used as target practice for the Ausralian Navy as it was still causing a lot of navigational problems for mariners during the daylight.
The Point Perpendicular Lighthouse was offically exhibited in 1899 by the Ausrtalian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
The Point Perpendicular Lighthouse was constructed using concrete blocks.
In 1993, The Point Perpendicular Lighthouse was replaced by an automated stobe light as the goverment at the time did not have the sufficent funding that was required to keep the lighthouse keeper.
The Original Point Perpendicular Lighthouse was last lit on the 17th November 1999 by Ian Clifford as part of the celebration of the centenary of Point Perpendicular.
The Original Lighthouse is still to this day fully functional.
